Harish Keni has spent twenty-five years around addiction. He did not choose the subject. It arrived first as a childhood.
His father drank. Harish lost both his parents young, in an accident, and went to live with his aunt’s family. He was fed and housed and reminded of it. The phrase he still remembers is the one used when he walked into a room: here comes the one who eats for free.
He does not tell that story often, and he tells it now because the families who come to the centre are usually carrying some version of it. A child who has worked out too early that the adults are not managing. A wife who has stopped expecting an ordinary evening. Harish understood what addiction does to a household long before he knew there was a profession attached to it.
The working part began at ONGC, where he was in HR and kept finding the same problem on his desk. Workers whose attendance was collapsing, whose families were ringing the office, whose lives were coming apart because of alcohol. Nobody had given him a brief to deal with it. He dealt with it anyway, sitting with men through withdrawal and talking to their wives and parents.
What he took from those years was that the drinking was rarely the actual problem. Detox handled the body inside a week. The thing underneath it, the reason a man went back to the bottle two months later, was untouched by any of it, and nobody was addressing it.
He began visiting de-addiction centres across India to see how treatment was being done and where it was failing. He travelled to the United States three times between 2001 and 2003 to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and learn how recovery was practised in a place where it had been running for decades.

Harish is not a doctor and does not present himself as one. The medical and psychiatric care at the centre is led by qualified psychiatrists, including Dr Hardik V Patel and Dr Bhumika Patel. What Harish does is sit in the room. He meets every person admitted to the centre for one-to-one sessions, and he meets their families, because in his experience the family is either part of the recovery or part of what pulls someone back.
Ask him what the job actually is and the answer is short. Keep people alive, and stop a family being destroyed by something they did not cause and cannot fix on their own.
